A change of running (and living) plans

So often when I discuss body image, I relate it to how we see ourselves aesthetically and physically. We look in the mirror and all we see are the dimples, the flabby stomach, the weak arms, or the extra skin. We see a photo of us, and we can’t stand how we look in it.Read the whole post >>

False humility and how to avoid it

I used to think I didn’t have a pride problem. I know, I know. The first sign that someone probably has issues with pridefulness is her belief that she doesn’t. But truth is, self-flagellation, more than self-promotion, always came more easily to me. Once during spiritual direction, I expressed similar sentiments. “You suffer from aRead the whole post >>

What does an eating disorder look like?

For many, the term “eating disorder” conjures up an image of an Auschwitz-thin woman, all angles. Or maybe they envision someone binging on three large pizzas and finishing them off with a few pints of ice cream. But chances are you know someone with an eating disorder. At least 30 million people of all agesRead the whole post >>

Picture picture: making peace with the camera

PHOTO CREDIT: Ross Long Photography If I only I had half as much as confidence as this come hither koala… I mean, this guy just strikes a pose and owns it. You are not a number

During a recent run, I somehow got on the topic of the height percentiles of my two sons. One is very, very tall for his age, and the other is a pint-sized, little man. I then went on to discuss my height, my husband’s height, the average height of the American woman (which I amRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I'm the author of two nonfiction books Getting Past Perfect and Weightless, a storyteller*, overthinker, eating disorder survivor, mom of five, book junkie, socially awkward nerd as well as a speaker (so basically a walking and talking contradiction), and a perfectionist in recovery.

I am currently working towards my MFA in Fiction at Warren Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has read my drafts, offered feedback, and cheered me on. The writing life is often solitary, but I wouldn’t be here without a community of support.
