I’ve always been a magazine junkie, but I’ve been disillusioned in recent years by the secular media offerings for women. Even the most innocuous women’s publications on newsstands today too often marble in thoughts and ideas that go against my Catholic belief system. Take for an instance an article I read in a mainstream parenting magazine about a couple who thought they were infertile and discovered they were pregnant when they considered themselves too old to have a baby. The story, of course, had a happy ending. Although she considered abortion, the mom (and author of the article) chose to keep the baby and immediately fell in love with her little miracle. But I couldn’t help but be saddened by the whole premise of the article. Here’s a couple who’s been given the amazing gift of life against all odds; yet, because of what they view as “bad timing,” they’re not sure if they want to accept it!
Thankfully, I have discovered some great publications geared toward Catholic women that not only enrich my faith life and share stories promoting the sanctity of life, but also offer other fun stuff that I enjoy reading such as recipes, how-to articles, and features that simply relate to my role as a Catholic wife, mom, and woman. Two of my favorites are listed below. Happy reading!
Canticle: The Voice of Women of Grace
If you’re looking for a publication that is enjoyable to read while at the same time serves a higher purpose by helping you develop a deeper relationship with Christ and the Church, then look no further than Canticle. Here’s a look at Amazon.com’s product description of the faith-filled magazine: “You will find Canticle jam-packed with bits of information, instruction and inspiration to strengthen your faith as you walk with Jesus Christ. [The publication covers a wide range of topics] such as finding the the real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, The Blessed Mother, forgiveness and ways to deepen your prayer experience.”
A subscription to Canticle would make a great, last minute Mother’s Day Gift, and the publisher is currently offering a special promotion. Order one or more subscriptions before June 10 and receive one dollar ($1) off each subscription ordered! When you place your order, mention code SC07 to receive the discount. Faith and Family
I like to think of Faith and Family as a Family Circle or Woman’s Day for Catholic women. From gardening tips to how to host a successful baby or tea with the girls, it’s chock full of all the kinds of articles I enjoy reading as a mom and wife. Yet, everything is filtered through a Catholic perspective. You’ll even find a celebrity profile article in each issue where prominent figures, who are also Catholic, share how their faith has shaped their lives both in and out of the spotlight. It’s a glossy, beautiful publication that would be a welcome treat in most any Catholic woman’s mailbox.
