Child of God

A child’s reverence and level of understanding never cease to amaze me. Take Tuesday night when Madeline ran into Dave and my bedroom with tear-stained cheeks and told me, “God is watching over me, Mommy.” She started to run back to her own bedroom where Daddy was sitting outside the door helping our fearful, fight-sleeping child go night-night, but then abruptly stopped. She ran back to me, now smiling. “A big hug for you, Mommy!” And she hugged me with all her strength and planted a soft kiss on my lips.

My dear child of God who already is better at remembering that he’s watching over her when she’s having a rough go of it.

Lord, help me to remember you are always with me. When I am tired or weak or scared, help me to seek solace in you. I am a wife and mother, but I am also a child of God and you are always here to pick me up and to hold me in your arms. Amen.

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

“She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.”

―Flannery O'Connor
