Moment of Truth

Tonight during dinner Madeline wasn’t saying much. Her puffed cheeks indicated that her mouth was full of water. She sometimes does this in the morning with milk. She’ll take a few sips and savor it in her mouth for a while like a provident chipmunk. Strange behavior but not worth a fight. But tonight was a different story. Madeline finally decided to open her mouth before swallowing and it wasn’t just water she was storing. It was all of her corn and some chicken fajita, chewed up and watery, pouring out of her mouth and onto her dress and our floor (which happens to be carpet – what were we thinking buying a place with carpet in the dining area with young children?).

Dave and I both screeched, “Ahhhh! Maddy, what are you doing?”

The contents continued to ooze from her mouth, but she made no effort to answer us.

As Dave was cleaning up the mess (I was nursing), I asked her, “Why did you do that, Madeline?”

She looked me right in the eye and smiled before admitting, “I don’t know.”

At least she’s honest.

Hi, I’m Kate

I'm the author of two nonfiction books Getting Past Perfect and Weightless, a storyteller*, overthinker, eating disorder survivor, mom of five, book junkie, socially awkward nerd as well as a speaker (so basically a walking and talking contradiction), and a perfectionist in recovery.

I am currently working towards my MFA in Fiction at Warren Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has read my drafts, offered feedback, and cheered me on. The writing life is often solitary, but I wouldn’t be here without a community of support.
