Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Here’s a look at Madeline and my breakfast conversation this morning (if you were expecting some deep, thought-provoking treatise on the past, present and future, sorry to disappoint you):

Madeline: Daddy, coming home today?

Me: Yes. He’ll be home soon, but he’ll need to sleep after working all night.

Madeline: It’s tomorrow?

Me: No, it’s today. Yesterday was Wednesday. Today is Thursday. Tomorrow is Friday.

Madeline: Today is “Tursday”?

Me: Yes.

Madeline: But I thought you said Daddy was coming home from work tomorrow?

Me: I did, but I said that yesterday when today was tomorrow.

Madeline: So it’s tomorrow?

Me: No, it’s today. Tomorrow is tomorrow, but when it’s tomorrow, it will be today.

Madeline: Tomorrow?

Hi, I’m Kate

I'm the author of two nonfiction books Getting Past Perfect and Weightless, a storyteller*, overthinker, eating disorder survivor, mom of five, book junkie, socially awkward nerd as well as a speaker (so basically a walking and talking contradiction), and a perfectionist in recovery.

I am currently working towards my MFA in Fiction at Warren Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has read my drafts, offered feedback, and cheered me on. The writing life is often solitary, but I wouldn’t be here without a community of support.
