Working Wednesday

I had every intention of posting something here today in honor of my Working Wednesdays. In fact, earlier this week I’d scribbled notes that were only the seeds for something that would surely prove to be prolific. You just may never see their brilliance blossom because things happen, things like a sick baby.

So today my life is meant to be spent nursing a coughing, sneezy, clingy munchkin back to health while still making a 3-year-old feel loved as well as taking it easy myself after several nights now of very little sleep. “Working Wednesday” will have to wait. Oh, I’ll be working and it will be a labor of love. It just won’t involve typing or pontificating (well, maybe a little as in, “Don’t put your fingers in your baby sister’s mouth.” “Why?” “Because you shouldn’t ever do that and she’s sick and has germs and I don’t want you catching them.” “But, Mommy, you just put your fingers in her mouth to check her teeth.” “That’s because I’m the mommy. It comes with special privileges.”) Maybe we’ll be able to pull ourselves together and come together for a Thinking Thursday tomorrow. Maybe (probably) not. We’ll have to see what life throws at me and if my mombie brain is even capable of stringing together any coherent thoughts.

In the meantime, Sarah has a great post about, well, posting. She shares reasons why we blog as well as reasons why we shouldn’t feel guilty about doing it – unless, of course, other more pressing things (AKA sick, snotty baby who is, by the way, napping right now) come our way. She compares the blogging world to a ministry where people lean on one another even if it’s not in the flesh, offer support, share parenting tips and anecdotes that make us laugh and sometimes cry, and a “place” where a cadre of prayer warriors are on hand just when you need them or even when you think you don’t. Today I think I do – need prayers that is.

So I’ll pay it forward now and offer gratitude to all you bloggers out there who support me and just as Sarah did, I’ll say a Hail Mary for you.

Prayers for you and the girls, most definitely!

Praying for you today, Kate! Today I wrote about all things in their season, and I thought of you and your little girls. It is such a special time for you with them. Enjoy them (although I know it’s hard when they’re sick!) Before you know it they’ll be all grown up, like my girls. Sigh…

I’ll pray, too! Hope you get more sleep soon. I’ve been right there lately as well.

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
