Job Prospects

It’s never too early to start planning for your future or to start thinking about your career choices.

Madeline, 3 1/2:
Mommy, I want to be a doctor when I’m older and bigger.

Me: That’s a good idea. You’ll have to be in school a long time.

Madeline: Or maybe a zookeeper. Or like that lady at the grocery store…

Me: A store clerk?

Madeline: Yes, and like at Wal-Mart, too. And maybe a hairdresser. And I want to be on the stage. And a writer and artist like the ones in the books from the “libary.”

Me: That sounds great.

Madeline: Can I do them all?

Me: Well…

Madeline: Mommy?

Me: Yes?

Madeline: I want to be a mommy, too. Like you.

Looks like I’ve got the best job in the world…

When I babysat a girl she told me she wanted to be a store clerk and a famous singer. I told her she probably couldn’t do both since the famous part would make it hard to do her clerk job. She told me her mother said she could be anything she wanted to.

I learned a valuable lesson that day – never interfer with the dreams of children!

My 3 1/2 year old son always asks if he can be a [fill in the blank] when he grows up. When I say yes, he screws up his face in concentration and says, “Can I do that AND be a dad?” The only time I’ve had to say no is when he asked if he could be a priest and a dad. ;) It’s so darn cute to hear what children dream about!

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
