A Mom’s Job Description According to a Preschooler

Madeline: Where’s my…

Me, handing her her beloved tiger stuffed animal before she can finish saying, “Where’s my Raja?”: Here it is.

Madeline: You knew I was going to ask for my Raja.

Me: Yup.

Madeline: Why?

Me: That’s one of my jobs – to know things you need.

Not to mention the fact that we have the exact same bedtime routine every single night, and it always involves me handing her Raja and her sleep mask. Yes, my 3-year-old sleeps with a mask. When you have an insomniac, you will do whatever it takes to steer her toward Slumberland.

Madeline: No. You’re job is to take care of us, to feed us, to turn off the light. To take care of Baby Rae. To do all sorts of crazy stuff.

Moms, don’t think of your life as just a string of tedious tasks. We do crazy stuff, ladies!

Hi, I’m Kate

I'm the author of two nonfiction books Getting Past Perfect and Weightless, a storyteller*, overthinker, eating disorder survivor, mom of five, book junkie, socially awkward nerd as well as a speaker (so basically a walking and talking contradiction), and a perfectionist in recovery.

I am currently working towards my MFA in Fiction at Warren Wilson. Thank you to everyone who has read my drafts, offered feedback, and cheered me on. The writing life is often solitary, but I wouldn’t be here without a community of support.
