I Get No Kick From Champagne…

…especially as a dry preggo, but oh, how our family got a kick out of our baby’s 20-week ultrasound.

“Your baby looks perfect,” the doctor told us.

And she did. I’ve never had such a clear ultrasound. We saw her tiny foot kung-ku kick toward us. We could see the baby’s eyes open and close, and we watched as she smacked her lips together.

“She’s practicing nursing!” Madeline exclaimed as Rae lifted her shirt and rubbed her belly as if her hands were transducers. All the while, Rae kept saying, “Baby! Baby!”

Our growing family has much to be thankful for as we enter this season of gratitude.

(And, no, we don’t know for sure if the baby’s a “she.” We didn’t find out on Friday, so I must leave you in suspense.)

What a wonderful experience. I am also pregnant with #3. It is interesting to see my 4 year old respond for this pregnancy. I don’t think I’ve ever commented before, I just wanted to tell you I enjoy your blog. I have two boys, the youngest is 15 months old. We won’t be finding out what gender this one is either, the others were surprises as well. Good luck and God Bless you and your family. May St. Gerard continually pray for the health and your new baby.

I’m so happy it went well, Kate. I know I feel sooooo relieved after the ultrasound. How exciting!

BTW, I hope everyone is feeling better at your house. We are dealing with the stomach bug here. No fun!

That was a tease! I thought you were passively sharing that you found the baby is a girl! did you do the envelope/Christmas thing or did you flat out not find out? I can’t believe you got to see the baby’s eyes open and close! How cool!! I’m happy to hear everything checked ok!

My 4 yr old and one of the twins came over as I was looking at this and said, “Look at that!” I said, “What is it?” And they both said, “It’s a little baby’s foot.” What a great picture. It is so much fun to see your baby “perform” on the sono, isn’t it? We’ve never been brave enough to take all the kids to a sono. Maybe next time. Not that I’m announcing anything. :)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
