We’re Off to See the Wizard!

As promised, here’s a group shot and cast list from our trip down the Yellow Brick Road on Halloween:

Cast of Characters:

The Tin Man: Gaba (my mom)
Toto: Rae
Glinda the Good Witch: Nana (Dave’s mom)
Dorothy: Madeline
The Wicked Witch: Yours truly (I’m not going to take it personally that Madeline asked me to dress up as the Wicked Witch, especially since she asked Pop, a 6’5″ man, to be a Munchkin.)
The Scarecrow: Dave

Not pictured: Papa (my dad), who was cast as the Cowardly Lion and ordered a one-size-fits-all costume that he called his “sausage casing” and thus refused to wear out in public (even a grandparent’s love has limits) and Pop (Dave’s dad), who just couldn’t come up with a suitable Munchkin get-up.

I love it! Unfortunately, Jaina had to make do with “Pink Doggie” who isn’t pink at all, to be her “toto” :)

I swear, she has some of my genes — I don’t know how it happened! I guess I was just meant to be her godmother! :o)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
