Nativity Play

Madeline made her big acting debut in our homeschooling co-op’s Nativity play on Sunday afternoon (well, when she was 2, she played a confused donkey in the stable, but her only line was “Mommy!” and it wasn’t in the script).

As one of the three kings, she croaked (she’s caught my nasty cold), “I bring gold to the ‘ting’ of ‘tings,'” and presented Baby Jesus with some gold (chocolate) coins.

After the play, St. Nicholas paid a visit and asked the children what they were giving to Jesus this year during Advent. Some children said they were going to be extra nice to a sibling. Others said they were going to pray more. When it was Madeline’s turn, she shyly approached the kind-hearted bishop while nibbling on one of the leftover chocolate gold coins.

“What will you be giving Jesus this year?” he asked.

“I already gave him some chocolate gold coins,” she replied.

I love it! This cracked me up — I had to share it with my husband. I love how kids will say things that in an adult would be snarky but in a kid are just calmly logical.

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
