Nineteenth Day of Advent

Make a donation to your favorite charity. Ask older kids if they would like to make a donation as well.

One of my family’s favorite worthy causes is Food for the Poor.

Another wonderful charity that would be fitting to give to as we prepare for Christ’s birth is the Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem, a state-of-the-art healthcare facility that ensures that no woman is told, “There is no room.”

The U.S. Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation raises the needed funds to meet the operational expenses of the hospital. Donations are tax deductible. For more information, please visit the Foundation’s website.

You may read more about about the hospital’s mission in an article I wrote for the December issue of Canticle. In addition, I recently included a Q&A blog post with Kathryn Abell, a volunteer who has worked tirelessly on behalf of the hospital since 1996 and helped to form the Holy Family Hospital of Bethlehem Foundation.

As Kathryn says:

“Holy Family Hospital is a beacon of light in a dismal landscape. There are countless personal stories of mothers saved from dying, of newborns born prematurely whose lives were saved because the hospital intervened. In the Church of the Nativity, I heard Pio Cardinal Laghi proclaim the Scripture, ‘She wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger.’ Today in the guise of a two pound, premature newborn baby, Holy Family Hospital is doing that every day.”

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
