A Poem for St. Patrick’s Day

Four-Leaf Clover
by Ella Higginson

I know a place where the sun is like gold,
And the cherry blooms burst with snow,
And down underneath is the loveliest nook,
Where the four-leaf clovers grow.

One leaf is for hope, and one is for faith,
And one is for love, you know,
And God put another in for luck–
If you search, you will find where they grow

But you must have hope, and you must have faith,
You must love and be strong–and so–
If you work, if you wait, you will find the place
Where the four-leaf clovers grow.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow….

I wonder what St. Patrick would think of your 4 leaf clover? After all, a trinity has 3 parts, not 4. ;-)

The 3-leaf clover has been a great teaching tool for my preschooler. I can understand why St. Patrick used it teach others about the Trinity.

God bless, and happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
