Small Successes 7

1. Thanks to outsourcing the bedtime routine last night to Nana, I slipped into the shower all by myself (with no little girls anywhere remotely near the bathing premises). But that’s not all. I also managed to overcome the big preggo belly obstacle and shaved my legs without leaving too much bristle behind.

2. The reason for my leg-shaving efforts is twofold. First, my husband is on his way home after being out of town in D.C. for an entire month for mandatory work training. I survived sans my husband AND I respected his wishes (for security reasons) and didn’t even blog about it until now (this counts as my success #2 for this week). Second, I don’t want to go into labor and have my midwife and/or L&D nurse suggest I invest in a Furminator.

3. I received an early birthday present the other night (I turn the big 3-0 this weekend). The girls and I were curled up together in bed and I’d just finished reading the last book when out of the blue, my 4-year-old wrapped her arms around me and said, “You’re the best Mommy in the whole world.” Call me a big sucker, but that made everything – even the relentless bedtime stalling– well, well worth it.

Happy early birthday…I’m only a few days older than you, which makes me feel great! My husband jokingly complains that I will always shave my legs for the aerobics instructor, but not for him. Sad, but true!

I’m with you on the shaved legs for delivery. I also just bought some nail polish so the people in the delivery room don’t have to see ugly toe nails either :)

In case I forget, or go into labor, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Congrats on the leg shaving! I remember having my daughter paint my toes because I couldn’t reach them!

    Blessings!

Happy Birthday early! I didn’t even have any kids yet when I turned 30. My husband and I had just barely started dating at the time. And oh, I can remember a couple rotations being gone somewhere for a whole month. That must have been difficult being on your own for that long. And it must have been a penance all its own not being able to vent about it on your blog!

WOW a month is a huge amount of time, especially being so pregnant. What a strong woman!
Have a wonderful birthday and happy homecoming;)

    Happy birthday!

Was your husband able to come home on the weekends? Probably not. It is hard to have husbands gone for so long. Mine went away for four weeks of training last fall and one time (several years ago when I had a 3YO, a 2YO, and a 6 Mo old) he went to Georgia for training for six weeks! That was the longest summer EVER. I’m grateful for his job, though, and take great comfort in knowing how permanent it is. Whew! :)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
