Happy Mother’s Day!

“Thank you, women who are mothers! You have sheltered human beings within yourselves in a unique experience of joy and travail. This experience makes you become God’s own smile upon the newborn child, the one who guides your child’s first steps, who helps it to grow and who is the anchor as the child makes its way along the journey of life.”

-Letter of Pope John Paul II to Women, June 29, 1995

Happy Mother’s Day to both of the moms in my life…

To our girls’ nana, the antithesis of what we hear mother-in-laws are supposed to be like, and the breastfeeding guru who is like a second mom to me, thank you for your friendship, your weekday “drive-bys” and visits, for always supporting me in my mothering role and for being such a positive force in all of our lives.

To our girls’ Gaba and my own beautiful mom who is also one of my best friends, I am so thankful for our relationship. You’ve always been God’s smile upon my life and someone who has helped me anchor myself and my life to my faith. I can only hope to be half the mom you’ve been to me.

Happy Mother’s Day to you! What sweet things to say about the two mom’s in your life. God Bless!

(I think I saw you at Mass today! In the communion line – one day I’ll be able to leave the sanctuary fast enough to say hi LOL! Have a fabulous day!!)

    Happy Mother’s Day!

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

“She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.”

―Flannery O'Connor
