Queen for the Day

My family gave me the royal treatment yesterday. After church, the girls and Dave made a delicious brunch. Scrambled eggs with cheese and sauteed onions and mushrooms served as the main dish.

Later Madeline and Rae adorned me with a handmade crown, and I was bejeweled with a dazzling bead necklace also crafted by preschool hands (with just a little help from Daddy).

When Madeline chose the biggest heart bead to add to the necklace, Dave told me she said to him, “She deserves a big heart, Daddy. Don’t you know that?” (She always makes me feel so worthy.)

For dinner, Dave picked up some Mexican takeout. Oh, and I napped for one blissful, uninterrupted hour.

Just before dinner Madeline asked, “Wasn’t this a good Mother’s Day?”

And it was – very, very good.

What about you? How did you celebrate Mom’s Day?

I got taken out to dinner on Saturday (an actual date with my husband!). On Sunday, we went to Mass, had Panera for breakfast, everyone worked on getting my vegetable garden together, and then all my boys cooked me a lovely steak dinner! It was great!

Oh wow – Kris – can your boys come do my garden…my still non-started garden lol?

What a perfect day for you both! Love the crowns and jewels Kate, and Sunday plans.

We did mass, then went to my parent’s building and had lunch in the main dinning room with all of our area family members. It was nice. We came home and crashed and relaxed. Hubby made a great simple dinner and we just hung out. It was a great day. I love “first” mothers days with a new baby….so special.

    Have a great week ya’ll!

    How fun!!
My mother’s day was a blissful day of absolutely nothing! The baby actually slept until 9:30 after her 6am feeding, and my hubby kept the older girls entertained so that I could sleep in as well. It was great!!

    Kate, love the queen gear!
We had a lovely day,Mass followed by a reception for mothers, then a brunch and a walk in the woods.
My girls made me a spiritual bouquet, just what a busy mom needs!

So glad you had such a nice Mother’s Day! Also, I recently realized that I’m such a bad blogging friend that I never even congratulated you on the birth of your new little one!

So…Happy Mother’s Day a little late, and congratulations on the new baby very late. :)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
