Forget the Sugar and Spice

I discovered this fine art in one of my 5-year-old’s thank you notes. I asked her (yes, her) about it and she very conversationally told me what her little figure was thinking about in each bubble above his head: A house, love, someone holding a balloon, and…

Do you see something stinky (and not-so-lady-like) about one of the guy’s thoughts?

Honestly, I don’t know where my daughter gets her obsession with all things stinky from. Well, maybe I do.

Too funny! Last night our little lady was wanting to count her poops in the potty.

With 4 boys, we are WELL versed in all types of potty humor. Our favorite phrase (compliments of my sister, who has no children…!) is "Face it, farts are funny!"

It took me a second to realize what I was looking at…but once I did…HILARIOUS! My husband thinks it's quite funny as well! I'm glad there are other people out there who don't get all freaked out about "poo humor" :-)

Total greatness! I can totally see my daughter doing that. She is in love with things that smell. Be it "stinky" or feet or whatever… She wants to smell it.

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
