Good-bye, Summer. Hello, Fall.

The summer is waning despite the sticky 90-degree weather we endured last week. Pears are back in season, which makes my sweet Rachel so happy because there’s nothing she loves more than sinking her teeth into a ripe, juicy pear. We’re spending our Saturdays on the soccer field sidelines again. Madeline loves the game and has a lot of hustle. When she’s on the field, she never stops running – or smiling.

And then there’s our annual trip to the county fair.

The ponies and merry-go-round enchant our Rachel. She quietly takes it all in while her big sister shouts and points at everything.

M.E. had her first ride on a merry-go-round with Nana by her side and loved it.

Other plans for our fall include visiting a pumpkin patch, a short trip to Charleston, South Carolina to snuggle with our dear friends’ new baby, lots of nature walks, Saturday bike rides, lots of pumpkin-inspired recipes, and a new dinner menu that puts my crockpot to good use.
I don’t have too many words right now, but I have a lot on my mind and in my heart. I hope to get it out soon, but for now a simple, photo-driven post will have to do.

I love photo posts. I get a better sense of the family that I read about. But this comment is more for a previous post you wrote. The one where you said.."keep your eyes on your own work". I have replayed that phrase over and over again (especially in my mommying) since reading it and I have found myself uplifted and encouraged by preforming the simple task of keeping my eyes on my work and not comparing it to others. I just had to say thanks for those great words. It has really helped me lately and I have been wanting to thank you!

I'm sad you won't need to drive through S'burg! But enjoy your trip to SC :) Wave to me on the highway :)

Your girls are just beautiful! Love the photos. That ferris wheel looks like so much fun!
My son played soccer this summer for the first time and just absolutely loved it. He's just turned 6 so it was very, very casual, thankfully. After his last game, he said "Mom, there's definitely three things I know about soccer. 1. You run a lot. a lot. 2. You get tired from all that hustle. 3. It's very frustrating when the baby sister pours out the water bottle while I'm playing." I think he may continue despite the baby sister mishap:)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
