Mrs. Testosterhome

Rachel Balducci, author of How to Tuck in a Superhero and Other Delightful Mysteries of Raising Boys, rocked the UGA house at the Grady College Authors Alumni Showcase yesterday – and she rocked the baby, too. In fact, the only one who drifted off to sleep while she spoke was Isabel.

Her talk was great and encouraging to a room full of University of Georgia journalism students (and to me as well). She said many wise things, but one of her greatest tips was to not try to write like someone else. Find your voice. Put your best work forward because you never know who’s reading (her publisher found her via her blog). Write what you know, and enjoy the process.

Oh, and just an FYI, Mrs. Testosterhome: The other morning I was trying to visit your blog and must have mis-typed “testosterhome.net” because this is where I arrived instead. Not to get your boys all riled up, but these guys make Chuck Norris look like a total wimp. I’m just saying.

    Kate,
You have a great blog. I still remember how you would come to the Douglas house with a spiral notebook and pen … ready to take notes. I'm glad your career has taken off (and your three daughters are just adorable!).

I loved your post on Wistful Moms. I know the feeling — back in August I wrote something similar (http://ladolcevitathesweetlifewiththreesons.blogspot.com/2010/08/extraordinarily-ordinary.html), but I couldn't find the right word to convey what I meant, but you found the right word with "wistful".

    Have a blessed weekend!

Maria, thank you so much for your encouragement. I don't if you remember or not but at the time of DOM I was mainly freelancing for secular publications. At one of the meetings I mentioned that I felt God was calling me to write for Christian publications, but I was scared of putting myself and my faith out there's, and I was also afraid of branching out and getting out of the professional comfort zone. Well, God kept knocking on my heart. I'm so glad he did because I've found great joy in writing about my life through the lens of my faith.

I'm so glad cyberspace has connected us again. Your blog is wonderful, too. The post you shared was beautiful.

    God bless!

Forgive the typos above. I typed that comment (not very well) on my phone!

    Blessings!

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
