Sledding in the South…

…calls for improvisation.

Meanwhile, Mary Elizabeth is still eating snow…

Okay, I know my friends from the North are probably thinking, “Enough with the snow day pictures already. What’s the big deal?” Well, imagine you had three whole days of balmy weather warm enough for you strip down to a light sundress. Pretty crazy, huh? Having enough snow on our ground to build real snowmen and to even give sledding a shot is quite a novelty in these parts. The only downside is we really don’t have warm enough clothes for this weather, so we don’t last too long out in the winter wonderland. I was thinking of buying some clearance snow gear online; however, I know that if I invest in any, we won’t get a drop of snow next year. Ah well. We’re going to enjoy it while we’ve got it. It looks like we’ll be snowed in for one more day tomorrow. Then temps are predicted to rise.

I’ll get back to writing more substantive stuff one of these days.  If you don’t want to miss my future cogitations, then subscribe to Momopoly.

I've decided we get enough snow to justify purchasing a snow shovel at least!

    Kate —

Snow gear tends to be "adjustable" by sizes, i.e. even if it's a little big you can still wear it. If you just get some inexpensive stuff for Maddie and Rae, probably Rae's stuff would work for ME next year, etc. That's what I do with the boys and we just pass down, so I really haven't had to buy that much – just mostly year to year for Josh. Laughed at the bin "sledding" – we discovered that Boogie boards we have for the beach have worked as the BEST sleds!! And we also own not one, but TWO snow shovels, making us very popular with the neighbors.

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
