Birthday Pictorial

I’m still working out several kinks in the new website and learning my way around Word Press (please be patient with me; I know my feed has been a bit whacky, sending out old posts, only snippets rather than the full content), so I thought rather than attempting to piece together pretty prose describing Mary Elizabeth’s sweet, simple, strawberry-themed family shindig, I’d just share some photos from the day.

The very (and easy!) homemade invitations I put together to send to grandparents, uncles and aunts, and her godparents
Snapped from my phone, so forgive the blurriness
Strawberry cupcakes - yum! I also made chocolate-covered strawberries for dessert.

In case anyone is interested, I used Martha Stewart’s recipe for strawberry cupcakes with strawberry buttercream frosting. NOTE: I ended up having to add about 1/2 cup powdered sugar to the buttercream frosting recipe because it tasted way too buttery for my liking.

Madeline picked out granola bars for Mary Elizabeth's gift because her little sister is always asking for "mo bars." They proved to be the perfect gift indeed.

Had to tell you–we were inspired by the Martha Stewart cupcakes! We cheated for my baby girl’s 1st b-day and used a mix (my 7-year-old was in charge), and changed to this recipe http://savorysweetlife.com/2010/03/buttercream-frosting/
and added strawberry puree because I don’t like to cook my buttercream frosting. You might think all that means it doesn’t count that you gave us the idea but it totally does. That pink frosting topped with berries in your pic looks just too good!

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
