Thanks, but no thanks

After she was finished doing this:

(4-year-old is biting her toenails in case the photo isn’t clear.)

She very sweetly asked, “Want some?”

Um, no thanks.

(Photos such as this will be securely archived as they may be useful in scaring off future boyfriends*.)

*My husband and I recently encouraged her to date her daddy or Knuffle Bunny when she spoke of boyfriends again, but she said Daddy was too old and Knuffle Bunny was too small. Sigh.

I’m so glad my children aren’t the only ones who do that. Ew.

Is she eating toenails or snot?

We’re at the stage where my 3-year-old says things like, “Boogers taste good!” and he couldn’t be more sincere. Yick.

Toenails, which is gross but somehow doesn’t seem quite as disgusting as a snot snack. (But I have had one child enjoy a booger or two or three.)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
