Mommy’s (not so) little man

Okay, so he’s still my little man, but Thomas has gained five ounces since he was born on the 28th. Mama’s milk does a body good. He seems to be handling my abundant milk supply quite well. He audibly gulps it down and hasn’t spit up much at all.

My husband worked all weekend and when he was home on Monday and had some time to examine the nugget, he couldn’t believe how much Thomas had filled out in just a few days.

My hungry man.

—

In other not-so-happy news, after celebrating his weight gain at the pediatrician yesterday I sat with him on my lap while the doctor listened and listened to his heart.  He squirmed. I did, too, wondering why it was taking so long. My pediatrician isn’t worried and I’m trying not to be, but she has referred us to a pediatric cardiologist just to make sure what she’s hearing is only what’s known as a flow murmur and nothing to be concerned about and not a ventricular septal defect (VSD). So I’ll be trekking to the big city to see a pediatric cardiologist on Friday. We had a lot of false alarms this pregnancy, and I’m assuming this will turn out to be the same thing. Even if it is a VSD, my husband says it’s likely a very small one that will close all on its own as my little boy grows. Still, prayers for a mama who’s not supposed to worry but really can’t help herself are much appreciated.

Oh Kate you’ll be in my prayers!! I know that feeling. The same thing happened with our daughter. I was a basket case. Everything worked out fine “just” a heart murmur which she still has at almost 2 now. We went to the pediatric cardiologist twice as well. You have my prayers for your anxiety and that the beautiful boy’s murmur turns out like my daughter did!

My daughter Maggie had a VSD. The hardest part was just having to get through the tests with her. It turned out to be harmless, and it closed by her first birthday. So, even if your little guy ends up having one, try not to worry about it. Best of luck on Friday!

We went through this with Peter. I can’t tell you not to worry, because you will, but use deep breathing and lots of prayer to get you through it. I’ll be praying for you and Thomas, too.

What an adorable little man! Congratulations, Kate!

Will be praying for you; I know the worry. My 3yr old has an ASD and will have his open heart surgery in 2 weeks. I need a lot of prayer intentions to offer up right now!

May your sweet Thomas get good results from the cardiologist.

Kate, he is adorable! What a blessing to have such a good little nurser. :)

I will indeed be keeping you and your little guy in my prayers. Could you perhaps keep Daisy and her family in your prayers as well? She is a sweet 12 year old girl who is undergoing open heart surgery today at 1:00 pm PST for a VSD. Link to her mother’s blog : http://amy-caroline.blogspot.com/2011/09/praying-for-daisy.html
Thank you! And continued blessed babymoon for you and your little man!

Thank you for inviting me to pray on behalf of Daisy and her family. I’m amazed by how many little miracles have tender hearts in need of tweaks. New life is such a tenuous, precious thing.

      Blessings!

He is just too cute! Joe told me in his baby jabber that he is jealous of Thomas’ hair! I’ll be praying that all the tests go well and for you to have peace of mind!

Prayers on the way for you and your little man! One of my favorite reminders from The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir: “God is working even now…though we cannot see it and we may not understand, remember God is still in control. he has promised to bring us through somehow, and He’s working even now!”

Praying for your adorable little man. My baby girl (4 1/2 months old) has a VSD, and I am ever so grateful to God that it seems small – she gains weight fine (even though she’s also tongue-tied), and I’d never know she’s any different from my other three if they hadn’t told me. Her pediatric cardiologist reassures me each time we see him that 95% of these things close up oon their own by the time the child is 5 years old. But I would appreciate prayers, too, because she is my smallest baby and there’s always that fear that gnaws in the back of my mind and in the depths of my heart. God bless your little family! ~Laura A. in Augusta, GA

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
