Who does that guy with the big, white beard and funny, red suit think he is?

Our family recently enjoyed the downtown Christmas parade and Festival of Lights. As the parade was drawing to an end, hoards of children were waiting for the prized float with the man to come down the lane. When Santa turned the corner in all his white-bearded, red-suited glory, children everywhere started to squeal.

“There he is!”

“There’s Santa.”

I lifted 2-year-old Mary Elizabeth above the crowds of manic children, so she’d have a better shot of catching a glimpse of Santa. “Can you see?” I asked.

She nodded with a very serious expression upon her face. It seems her opinion of the jolly, old man is not quite as approving as the surrounding multitude.

My daughter warily eyed the waving and ho-ho-hoing Santa and said, “That guy makes me nervous.”

So cute! I love those moments of truth. Last year Ben and Sophie were both quite nervous when we encountered Santa at Home Depot. Any strange man talking to them gets the silent treatment, why should Santa be any different?

My 2yo son shares ME’s appraisal of Santa. In fact, his nervousness extends even to Santa images in some of the Christmas books we have (last night, during the Polar Express – which he continually asks for because of the train – when we got to the page with Santa, he said “Mommy, turn page.” I’ve just ordered him some more books on the First Christmas (yay 2-day Amazon shipping) to fill in the holes in our Christmas book library now that I’ve removed all the Santa books.

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
