Weighing In

I’ll spare you yet another post related to making peace with your body and focus instead on my delectable dude who’s weighing in at just over 17 pounds at 4 1/2 months. He hasn’t missed too many meals, clearly. The girls told our pediatrician that he’s going to like jalapenos and Indian food because that’s what Mommy loves to eat. It’s true. I can’t get enough spice in my life. Actually, I like both sugar and spice as food and in the little girl variety. Madeline told the pediatrician she likes lentils and naan. Then Rae and Madeline talked about how they like raw spinach. Rae said, “Yum!” in reference to kale, too. It was one of those ridiculous moments of maternal pride – as if I really had anything to do with my adventurous eaters other than offering them healthy choices (and eating a variety of food when I’m pregnant and nursing perhaps since research shows your prenatal and breastfeeding diet impacts your children’s palates).

“Just so you’re not too impressed, we love our cookies and cake around here, too,” I told the student who was came in the room along with my pediatrician.

Sugar and spice. See?

Anyway, we’ll see if Thomas takes after his sisters and isn’t afraid to nosh on veggies or try things like Indian spiced lentils. In the meantime, he’s slurping up plenty of mama’s milk (day and night, I’m afraid. He’s no human Ambien, that’s for sure).

Madeline captured this shot of us at his well-child visit today. He’s in the 90th percentile for weight and 50th for length. Our own Jabba the Hutt, only a cuter, nicer version.

What a delightful picture! Madeline has a great eye. Thomas is wonderfully chubby, just like Anthony. Sounds like they have the same night time noshing habits too.

I’m very impressed by your girls adventuresome culinary tastes. Bella is starting to be open to trying new things and Sophie has always liked spicy foods; but Ben will only eat half a dozen things. Green beans are the only green thing he will eat and fish sticks are the only meat. I wish I could indulge my tastes for kale and spicy lentils but they give Anthony such terrible gas pains, screaming and arching his back, that I’ve had to cut a lot of things out, which also limits the diet of the whole family as I can’t model the eating and am in fact less likely to prepare foods I can’t eat.

That’s great! Better than your child telling her dentist that she likes wine. Not the most proud mommy moment! We’ve had those lovely “spinach” moments, but they are few and far between! My kids bring me so many many moments of humility (or is it humiliation ?!)
Love the chubby guy pic! So healthy!

He has more rolls than a bakery – love it! Looks like my Xander. You are so lucky that you can eat spicy and gassy foods while breastfeeding – my babies wouldn’t let me. Some of them even made me cut out dairy and soy. Perhaps that’s why I don’t enjoy breastfeeding…because I’m always on a limited diet!

Super cute! He is absolutely precious. Thanks for the article link on pregnant mom’s diet’s while babes are in utero and breastfeeding; I’m going to pass it along to a friend who’s pregnant with twins and already has a rather picky eater that’s close to two years old.

LOVE the gorgeous chubby baby photo! I was just looking at baby pictures of my oldest at my youngest’s request (she can’t get over the idea that her big brother was once a baby!), and I almost forgot how deliciously roly poly he was. :) Almost identical to your son in size!

He’s so darn cute. My last three have all been super skinnies, which is also cute, but I miss those chunky fat rolls too.

And hey, I have the same Ergo. :)

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
