When your sorely neglected blog becomes a clearing house for saccharine sweet birthday letters

Good news: I’m still writing – a lot lately, in fact, because I have a new book project on the horizon. Woo-hoo. I’ll share more details soon but for now, I’m publishing another (very, very belated) birthday letter for our rambunctious 4-year-old Thomas. Merry Christmas, and happy New Year! — Dear Thomas, Happy 4th birthdayRead the whole post >>

A {very} belated birthday letter to a {very} special girl

So we have a few summer birthdays around here, and Rachel’s came first and here I am just getting around to posting it. I did write it awhile back, but I had to get some photos together for it. One of my favorite parts of writing these annual birthday letters is perusing photos from theRead the whole post >>

When your children drive you crazy

Several times a year my husband works three 15-hour shifts in a row starting on a Friday. After working the amount that most people work in an entire week in just three days, he then works from 5 pm to midnight for several days in a row. I feel badly for him because I knowRead the whole post >>

Nothing is wrong with you, it’s the dress (or jeans, shorts, etc.)

Not too long ago – although it feels like eons ago – I had the very rare (more like once-in-a-mom’s-lifetime) opportunity to go clothes shopping with two close friends. I walked through a clothing store full of beautiful garments, vibrant colors, and varicolored fabrics that looked as if they were spun from Nepalese saris andRead the whole post >>

A valediction to skinny jeans

Dear Skinny Jeans, I haven’t forgotten about you although I am working on it and hopefully at the end of this letter my farewell to you will be complete. For some reason, every time I open my closet lately I hear your siren song calling my name, taunting me and telling me that life wasRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
