I Think I Can (With the Help of God)

Lately I’ve been barraged by thoughts of what I can’t do. I can’t keep my home in tip-top shape anymore. I can’t get over my insecurities about officially starting to homeschool Madeline this fall. I can’t play with my older girls as much as I used to anymore. I can’t sleep even when I crawlRead the whole post >>

Blogging Meets the Real World

First a story: After M.E. was born, I received an email from someone who is a part of Loaves and Fishes, a ministry at my church that organizes volunteers to bring food to families in need such as those who have welcomed a new baby. This someone had signed up to bring me a meal,Read the whole post >>

New Column: Beautiful Girls

You can read my new column at Inside Catholic: Beautiful Girls. And won’t you please help deflect some of the negative energy this one has spawned? I just can’t win (perhaps I should stop trying). In response to my article, Desiderius (surely a pseudonym) made some good points all the while seeming to miss theRead the whole post >>

Your Baby is Just Fine and So Are You

Recently, I had the rare opportunity to go to the grocery store toting only the baby. She was a happy, wiggly little thing, and I quite enjoyed our visit as well as her many admirers. Typically, I’m in such a rush that I avoid onlookers. I’m not overtly rude, but I don’t stop to makeRead the whole post >>

A Toothsome Tale

Last Thursday my preschooler had a dentist appointment to get her teeth cleaned. Starting on Monday she kept asking, “How many days until my dentist appointment?” On Wednesday, I told her, “Only one more day.” To which she exclaimed, “Yea! I can’t wait.” Something tells me she could use a little more excitement in herRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
