Distractions from the Lord

I’ve combed through the comments following this column I recently wrote on why I believe young children belong at Mass, and I have so much I’d like to write in response but alas, I’m really, really working on limiting my screen time and only tackling absolutely necessary tasks right now. (Pray for me, won’t you?Read the whole post >>

A Mom’s Prayer

*This post was originally published in August 2008. I’m digging up posts from the archives in order to enjoy my husband’s time off and catch some extra Zzzzzs. My girls had been up before dawn. There had been no time to sit quietly and pray before my preschooler announced, “I’m hungry.” After I fixed aRead the whole post >>

Happy Birthday, Rachel Marie!

Happy Birthday to my Baby Rae, a lover of: Going “night-night.” Yes, you actually ask to go to sleep. I hit the mom jackpot with you. Showing off and saying words like “Japanese,” “guacamole,” and “porcupine.” You’re our little chatterbox. Anything your big sister Madeline loves or likes to do. Scones!

I love my blog readers. I really do. Not only do they make me feel like I’m not just pouring my thoughts into a black hole, but they encourage me and remind me I’m not alone in the trenches of parenthood. Oh, and I love it when they notice all the little details of myRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
