Having a Baby Changes Everything

I bet the title of this post gotcha. No baby yet. Still gestating… Just reflecting on babies, Match Day, and why my husband and I don’t mind being in the minority in the medical community for starting a family while he was still in medical school and continuing to grow our family while his never-endingRead the whole post >>

On the Eve of New Motherhood

Yes, I’m still a gestating machine, a freak of nature who can walk around “ripe” and ready to burst without any bursting for a month. I’m now 4 cm dilated and fully effaced. Baby’s head remains engaged. I’m also experiencing nausea again and have low blood pressure and dizziness, which my midwife thinks is theRead the whole post >>

Living a Life Worthy of my Calling

I’m still gestating. I’m also cutting back on computer time to soak up on life with my girls. So here’s a rerun. (I’ll probably be sharing a fair amount of recycled posts in the coming weeks as we adjust to our family of five.) I wrote a version of this post shortly before I wasRead the whole post >>

We Interrupt this Blog for Some Living in the Moment

No more bed rest. According to my midwife’s calendar, I am 37 weeks today. I’m supposed to still “take it easy,” but I can resume most of my normal activities, namely being a mother to my children. Thank you for your prayers. We are blessed beyond measure. Over the past two weeks I’ve had ampleRead the whole post >>

Gabas Rule, Mommies Drool

During an intimate pre-bedtime exchange: Me: What’s one of your favorite memories so far?Preschooler: Playing in the lake with Gaba. Me: Do you have any bad memories?Preschooler: Hmmmm… When you got mad at me for drawing on your sheets and furniture. In my defense, this unfortunate incident happened a few months ago (not when sheRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
