Finding Quality in the Quantity

I’ve heard plenty of experts say that it’s the quality of time with our kids – not the quantity – that truly matters. Although I can see what they’re getting at – that it’s focused attention our kids really desire from us, not simply our distracted presence like when we’re checking email and saying, “Uh-huh”Read the whole post >>

Dating My Husband

This past weekend my husband and I had the opportunity to enjoy a weekend retreat sans kids. During this babymoon of sorts, I read two books, slept more consecutive hours in two nights than I usually sleep in about three, and most importantly, had time to hop off the mommy track and enjoy my roleRead the whole post >>

Thank You…

…for humoring me and for putting up with my ridiculously self-absorbed, sleepless-in-Georgia post. I know I recently wrote about not comparing crosses, but when I have a cousin with leukemia fighting for his life, a friend who just lost someone important to her family to suicide, other friends who are suffering the loss of aRead the whole post >>

Operating in Survival Mode

They look cute, don’t they? Two sweet girls slumbering side-by-side. If only the pictures captured how I felt: Content and well-rested. I’m anything but that after last night. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
