Eleventh Day of Advent

Like most families, we receive dozens of Christmas cards every year, many of which include beautiful images of the Nativity, glittery winter nights or rosy-cheeked Santas checking their lists. It always seemed like such a waste to throw this heap of sentiments and artwork away. So one year I decided to make placemats using aRead the whole post >>

Tenth Day of Advent

As the Advent candles remind us, Jesus is the Light of the World. How can we not be hopeful knowing that Jesus is present in our lives right here, right now even as we wait for his coming? During dinner tonight, ask each family member to share their hopes and dreams for the future.

Second Sunday of Advent

Light two purple candles, and sing O Come, O Come Emmanuel (if you’re not the caroling types, feel free to play your favorite recording of the song). Also, Kris Chatfield, a friend of mine from church and my homeschooling co-op shared this wonderful Advent tradition her family has with me: “My parents always did thisRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
