Seventh Day of Advent: Feast of St. Nicholas

In honor of St. Nicholas, give an anonymous gift to someone in need. Since St. Nicholas is known as the protector of children, do something fun with your kids today. Sip hot cocoa together. Read a favorite Christmas book to them. Better yet, read A Man Named Nicholas. Or if you’re feeling particularly ambitious, tryRead the whole post >>

Book Meme

I am a Meme slacker and rule-breaker. My apologies. But this one from Ebeth (thanks for thinking of me!) was intriguing to a bibliophile like myself. Too bad I’m not reading something really profound like St. Augustine’s Confessions like I and surely most moms of young kids, of course, usually do. I’m juggling several booksRead the whole post >>

Sixth Day of Advent

The season of Advent is a good reminder that we really don’t need to wait until Christmas morning when we open all those colorful presents beneath the tree to consider the gifts Jesus gives us every day. Fifth Day of Advent

Elves From Catie

This is a recycled post about a tradition and charity that’s worth mentioning again. Please consider supporting Elves from Catie and donate an elf to a child in the hospital this holiday season. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
