Pay Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain

My preschooler has a new obsession with The Wizard of Oz. Saturday mornings are movie time at our house, and our TV-hungry child (I maintain fairly strict television-viewing rules during the week) is always eager to choose a movie to enjoy. For several weekends, she wanted to watch Dorothy explore the wonderful world of Oz.Read the whole post >>

Daddy On-Call Quiche

Daddy’s not a big fan of quiches, but my preschooler loves them. “When Daddy’s on-call again, can we have quiche?” she recently asked. And so we did. Here’s our favorite quiche recipe: Basic Quiche Ingredients:4 eggs1 cup feta cheese1 cup half and halfDash of salt, pepper, and nutmeg1-10 ounce package of frozen chopped spinach, cookedRead the whole post >>

Birthday Letter to Mom

Dear Mom, A mother’s love. Before I became a mom, I mistakenly assumed I knew how much you loved me. After all, I was always aware of your love whenever I’d discover surprise “love notes” tucked in my lunchbox along with my all-time favorite sandwich with the perfect proportion of honey and PB spread smoothlyRead the whole post >>

Delete, Rant, and Move On

I had to delete my first comment from my blog today*. It was written in response to a post I wrote last year called Regret Having Kids? Never! I’ve debated whether I should devote precious energy to responding to bitter Anonymous vitriol. I have no right to rant about viciousness even when it’s targeted atRead the whole post >>

My Earthly Angel

On Monday at around 2 p.m. I started heaving. At first, I assumed it was just another bout of pregnancy-induced sickness since I’m still feeling queasy and sporadically throwing up. But when I started shivering with the chills and when I couldn’t stay out of the bathroom for longer than 15 minutes with both diarrheaRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
