As in God Public Broadcasting… Never underestimate the power of God or television in a 3-year-old’s life. Madeline: Mommy, can I watch Curious George? Me: No. We’re not going to watch any TV today. Madeline: Peeeaaaaasssss. It’s ‘ed-juuu-cational.’ [translation: educational] Me: That doesn’t matter. We don’t need to watch TV every day. Me again butRead the whole post >>

My Rosary, My Lovey

I’ve always had a special devotion to Our Blessed Mother. Even as a child I remember praying to Mary during my bedtime prayers and then drifting off to sleep while clutching a string of rosary beads in my hand. Back then, it was the actual rosary more than the prayers that went along with itRead the whole post >>

Journaling for Moms

I have a box filled with journals dating back to the second grade. Here’s a look at an entry dated April 13, 1986: “We’re mooing. Today I want shoping and we were going to go to Veterans Acres. But Mom was to cold. Sheetie is getting big. I like this day.” No, I did notRead the whole post >>

Happy Mother’s Day!

“Thank you, women who are mothers! You have sheltered human beings within yourselves in a unique experience of joy and travail. This experience makes you become God’s own smile upon the newborn child, the one who guides your child’s first steps, who helps it to grow and who is the anchor as the child makesRead the whole post >>

Keep Watch Over Your Goats

Last night I poured my weepy, little heart out to my husband and told him how I was in a rough spot and had been feeling blue for various reasons. Dave patiently listened to me, took me into his arms, and then he reminded of one of the many reasons I love him by makingRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
