The Power of a Mom

“The first joy of a child is the knowledge that it is loved.” ~Don Bosco A dear friend of mine – we’ll call her Rose – is a true humanitarian. Whether she’s serving her patients as a pediatric resident or volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity in India, Rose is someone who constantly looks outsideRead the whole post >>

Working Wednesday

I had every intention of posting something here today in honor of my Working Wednesdays. In fact, earlier this week I’d scribbled notes that were only the seeds for something that would surely prove to be prolific. You just may never see their brilliance blossom because things happen, things like a sick baby. So todayRead the whole post >>

Out of the Mouth of My Babe

What I’ve extracted from the mouth of my very oral, very mobile, and very quick 10-month-old so far this week: 1. One piece of black sidewalk chalk2. A small rock3. An angel fish (of the small, plastic and Finding Nemo “tank gang” variety)4. A scrap of paper5. An unidentified, nearly fossilized, once edible piece ofRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
