Yarn Along: Unraveling

I have no beautiful images to show of my knitting progress (nope, that’s not my work to the left; my creation is looking a lot worse, actually). Nervous, antsy hands led to a mistake I could not figure out how to correct, so I’ve had to start my humble, little scarf completely over. Sigh. SoRead the whole post >>

Planning Ahead (But Not Too Much)

From my prayer journal, circa October 2010: “The plan of the LORD stands forever; the design of his heart through all generations.” Psalm 33:11 Dear God, I’m a planner. I’m always making lists, mapping out my day, my month, sometimes even my year. We’ve started our first official year of homeschooling, and my propensity toRead the whole post >>

Book Review: Happy Catholic – Glimpses of God in Everyday Life

I’ve long been a quote junkie, collecting the verbal fragments of others like someone else might accrue baseball cards or stamps. I have to be one of the rare teenagers who asked her parents for  a copy of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations for Christmas. So it’s no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed Julie Davis’s Happy CatholicRead the whole post >>

On Waiting

On the side porch of our house, we have these big, beautiful hanging baskets that are brimming with flowers. My husband bought these planters to beautify our exterior (he also planted the garden of flowers you see below running parallel to the porch – what a guy!) as well as to make our porch seemRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
