Why I Love My Grandma

Yesterday my nana turned 90. I called her up to wish her a happy birthday and asked how it felt to be 90. She chuckled and said, “The same way it felt to be 89 – old!” Then we started talking about my book. (I promise there’s a real point to this, and I’m notRead the whole post >>

Writing Elsewhere

You can read my latest column at Fathers for Good: The Home-Cooked Advantage – 5 Steps to a Happy Meal at Home. The article features Fr. Leo of Grace Before Meals (you know, the priest-chef who dueled it out with Bobby Flay on the Food Network and won!). I’m also honored to have a guestRead the whole post >>

Yarn Along: Progress Not Perfection

Well, it’s a start. So I went ahead and picked up my knitting needles again. They’d been gathering dust, along with colorful skeins of yarn, in a basket in the corner of my closet for months and months. I used to knit fairly often but never very well. When I was pregnant with my firstRead the whole post >>

Breastfeeding & Calling a Truce in the Mommy Wars

Today I want to talk about why it’s time we all call a truce in the mommy wars by focusing first on breastfeeding. This isn’t a “how-to-have-a-happy-nursing-relationship-post” or an “I’m-a-lactivist-and-here’s-why-treatise.” On the contrary, I want to make all moms feel comfortable around here – even those who for whatever reason were unable to or choseRead the whole post >>

Book Update

We interrupt this blog for some shameless self-promotion. So some folks who pre-ordered my book, Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body, have been telling me it’s scheduled to ship this week. How exciting! And terribly nerve-wracking. (Nail biting begins now.) Do I dare even read the Amazon reviews? (A sidenote: the Kindle version is notRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
