7 Quick Takes: The Natural Disaster, Broken Ankle, Swollen Eye, Among Other Things Edition

~1~ My husband returned from work around 1 a.m. on Thursday, and I was awake (I’ve been struggling with insomnia this week). We tuned into our weather radio, knowing that severe storms would soon be marching through our area. A few minutes into listening, we heard the eerie cry of a tornado siren. We piledRead the whole post >>

Seeing with God Eyes

My Lent this year was disappointing, mainly because of my extreme suckiness I didn’t completely live up to any of my resolutions and felt that I didn’t grow closer to Christ or cultivate any great virtue. My Holy Week and even my Easter didn’t meet my expectations either. Idealist that I am, life rarely does.Read the whole post >>

Fifty Days of Feasting

Easter blessings to you all. Alleluia! I hope to share more thoughts on my Holy Week and Easter weekend, but a nasty cold and the nearly constant ministration to a sick toddler who only wants mama has left me feeling like a Mack truck rolled right over me.  Truthfully, I haven’t been in the bestRead the whole post >>

The Triduum Awaits

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide. The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide. When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; ORead the whole post >>

Kindness is Contagious

Last week I was getting ready to pull out of a parking lot when I noticed a mom with her minivan’s side door open. I saw that she was trying to mop up a lake of juice from her car with only two napkins. I was in a hurry and thought of just pulling away.Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
