A Case for Happy & Sometimes Sappy Mom Blogs – Part I

Every once in awhile, I stumble upon a blog post ridiculing a whole website or a specific blogger for being too much like Pollyanna. Recently, in fact, I read a series of posts on a self-proclaimed Christian blog criticizing another Christian blog for not being “balanced” enough and for putting too positive of a spinRead the whole post >>

The Way to Love Anything is to Realize It May Be Lost

“The way to love anything is to realize it may be lost.” -G.K. Chesterton as quoted in Small Steps for Catholic Moms So I had a completely different post planned for today. I was going to share songs that moved me like Puff the Magic Dragon moves my 6-year-old (funny but true), but something elseRead the whole post >>

Just a Personal Reminder

Back in January I made a wish/resolution for 2011 over at Inside Catholic. Lately the tedium of home life has been getting to me (think daunting laundry piles, constantly plying little tummies with snacks, and putting socks on wiggly feet over and over again), so I just feel like I need the reminder to doRead the whole post >>

Love is in the Air(Waves)

Yesterday I had the opportunity to chat with Elizabeth and Lisa on the Faith & Famly Podcast. It was an episode all about love and marriage just in time for Valentine’s Day. Elizabeth shares how she makes these delicious-looking Valentine’s Dots with her kids (yum and so pretty!). And I come off sounding like aRead the whole post >>

Empty Yourself, Let God Fill You Up

“Excuse me, ma’am?” a teenager invades my deep thoughts as I stand stewing over what brand of canned black beans will provide the best nutritional bang for the buck. Organic or not?  I glance in his direction. He’s clad in all-black, his shoulders are slumped, and his hands are stuffed deeply in his pockets. “Yes?”Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
