Thank You!

Things have been crazy around here. Last week I was nursing sick kids back to health (nothing serious – just the sniffles and the crankies). We had old friends over for dinner last Friday. It was our first time entertaining in our new home, and it went well. Then on Saturday we went to anotherRead the whole post >>

The Art of Losing

What I like about those digital pregnancy tests for dummies is that the result takes out any chance of guesswork or misinterpretation. Instead of squinting at the stick you just peed on and wondering if a second faint blue line is really going to appear or if that single line is going to turn intoRead the whole post >>

Good-bye, Summer. Hello, Fall.

The summer is waning despite the sticky 90-degree weather we endured last week. Pears are back in season, which makes my sweet Rachel so happy because there’s nothing she loves more than sinking her teeth into a ripe, juicy pear. We’re spending our Saturdays on the soccer field sidelines again. Madeline loves the game andRead the whole post >>

Talking Frankly About Ecological Breastfeeding

You can read my new column at Inside Catholic: Talking Frankly About Ecological Breastfeeding. But before you do, a few things: I was invited to write a column explaining the benefits of a form of breastfeeding known as ecological breastfeeding (EBF) a long, long time ago after I mentioned the term “ecological breastfeeding” in myRead the whole post >>

Serving v. Judging

It’s funny how so often a theme pops up in my life that just won’t go away. Since writing this, I’ve stumbled across various quotes related to being a true disciple of Christ, about how it has less to do with judging and more to do with loving. There have been emails, too, from readersRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
