Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Work

A Catholic friend, who knows I marble some of Charlotte Mason’s philosophies into my homeschooling curriculum and home atmosphere, recently asked me my thoughts on Charlotte Mason as a “Catholic Impossibility” after she came across a negative post on a discussion board about the dangers of using CM. (For the record: This friend was notRead the whole post >>

Week In Review

Our basement flooded. I discovered this when my oldest ran downstairs to start school and shouted, “Mommy, the ceiling is leaking and water is everywhere!” The plumber was unable to determine the source of the leak. Ah, charming old houses! Because of the flood I had to cancel an afternoon play date with a professorRead the whole post >>

The Indoctrination Starts Young

My mom is a rabid Cubs’ fan. Pity her. Will it ever be their year? My mom is also a wonderful grandma – or as my girls call her, Gaba. However, there is one thing I take issue with. From the moment my children are born she begins plying them with Cubs’ paraphernalia. She teachesRead the whole post >>

Let the Little Children Come

After this post, I had a friend ask me if I could compile all the links to articles I’ve written about bringing young children to Mass. She knows someone who is struggling with  bringing her toddler to church and wanted to offer some encouragement, so I’ve included a list of articles related to this subjectRead the whole post >>

For the Children

You can read my latest column at the newly-designed Inside Catholic: Up in the Air. I was inspired to write this piece after a long month of traveling with little ones back in the spring. As we navigated crowded, public spaces, I noticed that some people showed obvious disdain as soon as they spotted myRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
