Rejection, Writing, and Motherhood

This post is for moms, writers, and writing moms. (And writer dads, too, if you’re out there.) From time to time friends or blog readers ask for advice on writing (that is, getting paid to write).  I have a generic response in which I share some of my favorite resources and tips for writing aRead the whole post >>

The Picture

The Picture The painter has with his brush transferred the landscape to the canvas with such fidelity that the trees and grasses seem almost real; he has made even the face of a maiden seem instinct with life, but there is one picture so beautiful that no painter has ever been able to perfectly reproduceRead the whole post >>

Spring Chickens & Guac

Don’t let the intriguing title of this post fool you. There’s nothing thrilling about the content. Just a craft idea and a recipe for some delicious guacamole. I (Almost) Heart My Mom Bod

Someone recently referred to my five-year-old as a “skinny, little thing.” A lot of women would love to have someone use those adjectives to describe them, but not my girl. Madeline was aghast. “I am not skinny,” she said with great indignation placing her hand on her jutted out (skinny) hip. “Y…” I stopped myself.Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
