Pace Yourself

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” The world is theirs. “An artist,” says the five-year-old. “A ladybug!” shouts the two-year-old. “A-yiiiiiiii,” says the baby. They cuddle close, waiting for their lives to unfold. Waiting. I fear it. I want to micromanage. Take my life – and sometimes theirs – and makeRead the whole post >>

Plan B*

As my readers know, I was really looking forward to making it to confession today. I arrived early, so I’d be one of the first folks in line. Then I waited. And waited. Just a few months earlier I’d driven one hour to my parents’ house, so they could watch my girls while I wentRead the whole post >>

When Necessary Use Words

“Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” -St. Francis of Assisi This morning I woke up with one thought: “Lord, give me the wisdom and words to defend my beliefs.” Last night I was engaged in a spiritual debate with a friend of mine who is an atheist. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.

“She could never be a saint, but she thought she could be a martyr if they killed her quick.”

―Flannery O'Connor
