Fall Fun

I’m over at Faith & Family LIVE today (and so is Madeline searching for the great pumpkin two years ago) talking about how my family heralds in the fall. Won’t you stop by and share your own ways of savoring this golden season? *I’m not officially (or spiritually) back yet, but things are looking up.Read the whole post >>

Happy Birthday, Rachel Marie!

Happy Birthday to my Baby Rae, a lover of: Going “night-night.” Yes, you actually ask to go to sleep. I hit the mom jackpot with you. Showing off and saying words like “Japanese,” “guacamole,” and “porcupine.” You’re our little chatterbox. Anything your big sister Madeline loves or likes to do. Twenty-First Day of Advent

Buy the ingredients to make a birthday cake with your children for Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. This is a tradition I’ve adopted from my husband’s family. His mom always whips together a moist and delicious plum cake (with the help of my oldest daughter, of course). It’s a light dessert to top off ChristmasRead the whole post >>

Happy St. Nicholas’ Day!

Growing up, my brothers and I always hung our “stockings with care” the night of December 5th rather than on Christmas Eve. The next morning we’d celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas and discover small trinkets in our stockings as my mom’s German heritage dictated. I’ve enjoyed carrying on this tradition with my own family.Read the whole post >>

Elves From Catie

This is a recycled post about a tradition and charity that’s worth mentioning again. Please consider supporting Elves from Catie and donate an elf to a child in the hospital this holiday season. Not only will you be spreading holiday cheer to a sick child, but $5 of the purchase goes to CURE Childhood Cancer.Read the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
