Happy Baptismal Day, Baby Rae!

Today we lit a white candle in honor of the day when Baby Rae joined the Body of Christ. We said a prayer together, and Madeline and I looked at pictures of Baby Rae from her Baptismal Day. (We ended up looking at Madeline’s baptism snapshots as well.) Gaba (my mom) fashioned the baptismal gownRead the whole post >>

The Par-tee!

We celebrated Baby Rae’s first birthday on Saturday with the grandparents. It was the perfect shindig. The only bummer is the birthday girl came down with a stomach bug that night and Mommy got to see all that cake and corn in a much less appetizing form in the wee hours of the morning. Valentine’s Day Cookies

Madeline and I love spending time in the kitchen. We bake and decorate sugar cookies for several different holidays, including Valentine’s Day. I always let her go wild and unleash her creativity on a few cookies. This usually means emptying almost an entire container of sprinkles onto one cookie. Happy Baptismal Day, Madeline!

Three years ago Madeline joined the Body of Christ (here she is pictured with her Gaba, my mom). So many parents make a big (and unnecessary) fuss over their kids’ birthdays. Admittedly, I have planned a family party each year for Madeline that includes presents, a fancy cake and a bit of festooning. Celebrating herRead the whole post >>

Cookie Swap Play Date

Last week I hosted my first annual cookie swap play date. “What’s a cookie swap play date?” you might be asking. Well, here’s the lowdown: First to address the “cookie swap” part. A cookie swap involves several people agreeing to make their favorite recipe and to exchange cookies (or other sweets) on a certain dateRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
