Creating, Living, Breathing, Pausing

Where have I been? Why the silence? Why the sole blinking cursor that never turns into letters or words?  First, we were busy creating (hence, the blog post below). My hands all dirty with paint and pastel chalk dust steered clear of the pristine (sterile, lifeless) keyboard.  More recently, we found ourselves in rural MaineRead the whole post >>

A Necessary Curriculum Tweak

So we’re easing into our homeschool routine. Recently, in the midst of digging deep into archeology, my 3-year-old daughter abruptly said, “P.U. Who pooted?” (My apologies for this potty talk to all my lovely Southern Belle friends.) “I didn’t,” said her big sister. “Did you Mommy?” asked the 3-year-old. “No. I would have said, ‘ExcuseRead the whole post >>

Glimpses

I’ve had a few requests for more glimpses into our new nest and our new life (which is blessedly beginning to find a happy, good rhythm), so here goes (my flash went out for a few of the shots and I could not find our charger immediately, so forgive the grainy quality): This is myRead the whole post >>

Birthday Girl

Dear Rae-Rae, First a story: We went to Minnesota in April for my cousin’s wedding. Following the ceremony, there was a long cocktail hour before the reception began. Adults were milling around, talking about boring adult things. We found a table and there you sat comfortably on Gaba’s lap, still and quiet. I offered youRead the whole post >>

Parenting the Easy Child

It’s early morning. I’m nursing the baby in the quiet. The sunlight is just beginning to seep in through the slants of the blinds when my toddler shuffles in. She looks at me, and I place my finger on my lips and whisper, “Shhhh…” She pauses and then cuddles close to me, burrowing her faceRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
