I Get No Kick From Champagne…

…especially as a dry preggo, but oh, how our family got a kick out of our baby’s 20-week ultrasound. “Your baby looks perfect,” the doctor told us. And she did. I’ve never had such a clear ultrasound. We saw her tiny foot kung-ku kick toward us. We could see the baby’s eyes open and close,Read the whole post >>

The Name Game

Madeline loves to name things. She named her handpicked pumpkin Elizabeth. She has a smorgasbord of imaginary friends (some are half-animal; others are simply little girls) that she thoughtfully branded as Feezy, Lassie, and Lucy (to name a few; I can’t keep up with all of her “friends.”). She’s also taken it upon herself toRead the whole post >>

Pregnancy Update

I’ve had a few people ask how I’m feeling, so here’s the lowdown: I’m still sick but not throwing up as much. My midwife convinced me to go on Zofran. I don’t like to take any meds while pregnant, but I decided to give it a try. It’s pricey, so we opted for the genericRead the whole post >>

Should We Find Out the Baby’s Sex?

Okay, so I was pretty much set on not finding out the baby’s sex this pregnancy (we found out with both the girls ahead of time) and letting it be a big surprise on D-day. Now I’m having second thoughts. Remember, I’m an anal planner. Also, Madeline’s pining for a boy. She knows God decides.Read the whole post >>

Baby’s First Close-Up

I had to get an ultrasound on Friday at 11 weeks. What I haven’t mentioned in my previous posts about my pregnancy is that there was a possibility I was carrying twins. However, Friday’s ultrasound confirmed there’s just one healthy baby floating around in there. When I first heard my hormones were super high, IRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
