Attachment Parenting at its Finest

Always one to show empathy and to respect the developmental needs and dignity of my children, here I am, four Christmases ago, with my firstborn ever-so-gently encouraging her to cozy up with Santa. Never mind the absolute terror in her eyes. Never mind that on any other day I would never dream of plopping myRead the whole post >>

Let the Detox Begin!

Today we celebrate Epiphany, the day the Magi brought gifts to the infant Jesus. Tomorrow I strip our home of its Christmas decorations and start to get back to real life (where we try to stick to some semblance of a schedule). My own gift to Jesus is a renewed awareness of His presence inRead the whole post >>

Rudolph, With Your Nose So Bright, Won’t You Help A Mommy’s Plight?

The answer is yes. My kids are both going through a picky stage. I suppose everything is relative because my 4-year-old did recently choose to eat a spinach salad topped with feta, black olives, cucumbers and Greek dressing instead of a greasy piece of pizza. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas Cards & Other Bah Humbuggers

To the Grinch who took my box of custom-made Christmas cards delivered from UPS right off my porch, you can steal my holiday packages, but you will not rob me of my good cheer. (I bet you were wishing for something a little more valuable than cards with photos of my kiddos, huh?) And getRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
