Mommy For HireThis is my latest column over at Catholic Mom. If you’ve been a regular reader to my blog, you’ve probably seen a version of this essay. The gist is that I should not only fess up to being a full-time mom when people ask me, “What do you do?” but I should beRead the whole post >>

First Love

I’ve been in kind of a horse crazy stupor lately. Madeline and I recently paid a visit to the mounted police headquarters with our homeschool group where we both delighted in feeding carrots to massive, beautiful Percheron-Thoroughbred crosses. Madeline giggled when their velvety muzzles tickled the palm of her hand as she offered them carrots.Read the whole post >>

A New Kind of Celebrity Worship

Recently, I decided to take this little personality quiz I discovered on Danielle Bean’s website. I took the quiz once, saw my personality summed up in a few paragraphs and felt confused. No, that couldn’t be right. (Even though the summary described me to a tee.) So I took it again. And again. I keptRead the whole post >>

Perfect Schmerfect

When I was around 3, I fell and cut my mouth while playing in the backyard. I ran screaming to my mom with blood dribbling down my chin and onto my summer dress. A Day to Live

For years now I’ve kept a news clipping wedged in the pages of an old scrapbook as a reminder of my mortality. The headline reads: School in mourning for girl killed in crash. Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
