Material Girl

This past summer we were over at a friend’s house for a play date. We were supposed to be swimming in their backyard pool, but the sky broke apart and rain started pouring down (that’s the last hard rain I remember) before we even had a chance to put on our swimsuits. To assuage MadelineRead the whole post >>

Counting My Blessings

I decided to practice an exercise in gratitude by listing every thing I’m thankful for that pops into my mind in a span of ten minutes. Now a few caveats: First, these are not listed in order of importance, considering fruit comes before dark chocolate and that Mary is number 36 on my blessing inventory.Read the whole post >>

Thanks be to God!

As Christians, we’re called to regularly give thanks to God in our prayer life. However, I too often offer up needy supplications that have more to do with what I don’t have than all that I am blessed with – from my good health and family to smaller but definitely gratitude-worthy things like a hiddenRead the whole post >>

What Haunts You?

If you’re anything like me, you’re not haunted by ghosts or goblins. Yet, there’s probably something less supernatural but more real that haunts you and keeps you from growing closer to Christ. Blonde Ambition

Scripture to ponder before reading on:“But the LORD said to Samuel: “Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature, because I have rejected him. Not as man sees does God see, because man sees the appearance but the LORD looks into the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 Does hair color or any otherRead the whole post >>

Hi, I’m Kate

I’m a wife, mom of five kids, writer, speaker, storyteller, bibliophile, runner, eating disorder survivor, and perfectionist in recovery. I'm the author of Getting Past Perfect: Finding Joy & Grace in the Messiness of Motherhood  and Weightless: Making Peace With Your Body.

I’ve tried a lot of things in my life – anorexia, bulimia, law school, teaching aerobics, extended breastfeeding, vegetarianism, trying to be perfect and failing miserably at it – and through it all I’ve been writing. And learning to embrace the messiness of life instead of covering it up, making excuses for it, or being ashamed of my brokenness or my home’s sticky counters.

Nowadays I’m striving every single, imperfect day to strike a balance between keeping it real and keeping it joyful.
